Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Many people come in feeling nervous, unsure what to say, or wondering if therapy will really help. That's completely normal. Here's what you can expect.
Your first appointment is a chance to slow down, get oriented, and feel out whether this is the right fit. You do not need to perform, have the perfect words, or tell your entire life story in one sitting.
You'll receive a confirmation email from SimplePractice with intake paperwork. You can complete it ahead of time online. You don't need to bring anything special, just yourself. If you're coming in person, you'll find the office at 1355 N Greenfield Rd in Mesa.
You'll be welcomed into a calm, comfortable space in the Red Rock Insurance Building (near Greenfield and Brown). If you arrive a few minutes early, you'll have time to settle in before we begin.
Amber will ask what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and a bit about your background. You don't have to have it all figured out. You'll share what feels comfortable, there's no pressure to disclose everything at once.
No judgment. No advice overload. No telling you what to do. Therapy is collaborative, we move at a pace that feels steady and respectful of your boundaries.
You'll have a clearer sense of whether it feels like a good fit and a grounded idea of next steps. If continuing together makes sense, we'll talk about goals and a plan that matches your situation.
Telehealth sessions are secure video appointments through SimplePractice. You'll receive a link to join. If you run into a tech issue, you can call or message and we'll troubleshoot together or reschedule if needed.
No. We may explore earlier experiences if it's helpful, but we start with what's bringing you in now and move at a pace that feels safe.
Crying is welcome. Many people feel relief when they don't have to hold everything together. There's no need to apologize.
Therapy is confidential with a few legal and ethical exceptions (such as imminent safety concerns). Amber will review confidentiality clearly so you know what it means in practice.
It depends on your goals, what you're navigating, and what feels sustainable. Some people come for a focused season; others benefit from longer-term work. We'll check in and adjust.
That's okay. A good therapeutic fit matters. If it's not the right match, we'll talk about it and discuss next steps or referrals.
